India LGD Village Data Insights
These figures describe the 2 September 2026 dataset used by Village Codes. They count records and relationships in the source; they are not population estimates and should not be read as Census totals.
Census cross-reference coverage
640,785 of 677,423 village records carry a usable Census 2011 identifier, while 638,919 carry a usable Census 2001 identifier in the source used for this site. Empty and all-zero placeholders are treated as unavailable. Village Codes keeps these historical references separate from the current LGD village code even when the digits happen to match.
Local-language names
171,731 village records include a local-language name in the source. The English name remains the main browse and search label, while the local-language name is shown as an additional source field when available.
Administrative relationships
664,242 villages have at least one development-block relationship, represented by 664,271 village-to-block mapping rows. 622,744 villages have at least one local-body relationship, represented by 639,670 village-to-local-body mapping rows. A village can legitimately have more than one mapping, so relationship counts can be higher than the number of villages.
Repeated village names
220,061 village records belong to a repeated-name group within their State/UT. This is one reason the LGD code and administrative hierarchy are more reliable than a place name alone when identifying a record.
Village status values
Status labels are retained from the LGD source. They describe the record classification in that dataset and are not a population count.

What is deliberately not turned into separate pages?
The LGD exports also contain ward-level details and other supporting rows. Village Codes can retain ward totals for local-body context, but it does not create millions of standalone ward pages when those pages would add little information beyond a code and name. This keeps the public directory focused on useful village and administrative records.
