Village Codes is an independent reference website. The directory is built from published government data so that village and administrative codes can be found in a clear, consistent format. We do not create official codes or administrative boundaries.
Local Government Directory
The main source is the Local Government Directory (LGD) published by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India. LGD data supplies State and Union Territory records, districts, sub-districts, villages, development blocks, local bodies and the relationships available between them.
Where the LGD source provides them, Village Codes also retains local-language names, village status, LGD record version, Census 2001 references, Census 2011 references, source remarks and administrative relationships. For local bodies, ward totals can be retained as supporting information when the build includes ward aggregation.
Historical Census directories
Current LGD pages are published on the main Village Codes domain. Historical Census 2011 village directories are kept on State/UT subdomains. This separation is intentional because the administrative geography used in Census 2011 can differ from today's LGD structure. Telangana is linked to the historical Andhra Pradesh Census geography, Ladakh to the historical Jammu and Kashmir geography, and the present merged Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu links to both of its historical Census directories.
PIN-code information
Village-to-PIN information may be added from the Open Government Data Platform of India resource for LGD villages with PIN codes. PIN data is kept separate from the LGD village code because a postal code and an administrative code serve different purposes.
Census references
Census 2011 and Census 2001 identifiers are shown only when a usable value is available in the source data used for the page. Empty values and all-zero placeholders such as 000000 are treated as unavailable. A historical Census code is never presented as a replacement for the current LGD code.
Data snapshot and changes
Administrative records can change over time. Each page shows the data snapshot date in the footer and on relevant pages. A record on Village Codes therefore describes the source data used for that snapshot, not a promise that no later government update exists.
Source limitations
Government datasets can contain missing fields, repeated names, historical references and many-to-many administrative relationships. Village Codes preserves meaningful source differences instead of filling gaps with guessed values.
